Job Description
This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. You qualify for application if you received your PhD within a five-year timeframe prior to employment. As a Sandian, in your postdoctoral position, you may bid on regular Sandia positions as an internal applicant. In some cases, a possibility could exist for you to be converted to regular career positions during your term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance. : The Nuclear Waste Disposal Research and Analysis Department is a team of highly dedicated and high performing group of experts who is seeking a postdoctoral appointee to do ground breaking, impactful research related to nuclear waste disposal. **Are you ready for your next challenge? Join this diverse and passionate team of high performing individuals and achieve success while making a difference.** On any given day, you may be called on to: + Work on experimental and modeling study of coupled physical and chemical process related to nuclear waste disposal; + Publish research and results in peer reviewed journals; + Complete milestones for related projects.Required:
+ PhD in Geological, Material, or related Physical/Chemical sciences; + Expertise on geochemical modeling and experiments of fluid-mineral interactions (sorption, reaction kinetics, phase equilibria) under various conditions of temperature and pressure.
Desired:
+ Expertise on reactive transport modeling using the PFLOTRAN computer code; + Experience with computer programming languages, particularly with Fortran 2003, Python, and C++; + Experience with the use and application of phase characterization technologies such as SEM-EDS, XRD, ICP and benchtop electrochemical methods.
Department Description:
The Nuclear Waste Disposal Research and Analysis Department is a team of dynamic, dedicated, and passionate professionals, scientists, and engineers. This team performs research, development and demonstration (RD&D) for the safe management and disposition of used nuclear fuel and/or high-level nuclear wastes from either commercial nuclear reactors or nuclear wastes produced by defense activities. RD&D covers multiple science and engineering disciplines and includes technologies critical to the solution of nuclear waste management problems. Performance assessment; decision analysis; chemical, physical, thermal and hydrologic process modeling; as well as environmental, chemical and low-level radioactive chemistry experiments are central to the departments' activities and capabilities.

Security Clearance:
This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to the work site. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment. If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE-granted security clearance, a pre-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for DOE-granted security clearances must be U.S. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position.
