Postdoctoral Research Scientist
Prof. Jim Norman/Dr. Leo Carlin
Starting Salary from £31,604 to £41,929 (Depending on experience) plus relocation allowance where appropriate. Initial 3 year fixed term contract.

The Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute supports cutting edge research into the molecular mechanisms of cancer development and is one of the leading research institutes in Europe. The Institute provides an outstanding research environment, underpinned by state-of-the-art core services and advanced technologies, with special emphasis on imaging, metabolomics, and in vivo models.

We are seeking a post-doctoral scientist to work in the laboratories of Prof. Jim Norman and Dr. Leo Carlin on a project to develop inhibitors of metastasis and recurrence in breast cancer. The post-doc will study the role of the innate immune system in breast cancer metastasis using state-of-the-art intravital imaging and transgenic murine models of the disease. We have evidence that a particular Rab GTPase acts within cells of the innate immune system to influence metastasis, and this project will investigate the cellular mechanisms of how this occurs and thus precisely define the way in which this GTPase must be targeted to oppose recurrence of the disease. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with groups at Imperial College who will be engaged in developing inhibitors for Rabs, whilst the work at the Beatson Institute will focus on the cell biology and immunology of its function in cancer. The successful candidate will have an interest in elucidating molecular and cellular mechanisms through which Rab GTPases can influence immune and cancer cell function and how this affects tumour progression and metastasis using transgenic models and intravital imaging.

The project is supported by the recent renewal of a Cancer Research UK drug discovery award, and will be driven by a multidisciplinary, multi-institute research team in the groups of Prof Ed Tate (medicinal chemistry & chemical biology, Imperial), Prof Jim Norman/Dr. Leo Carlin (Cancer biology, Beatson Institute) and Dr Ernesto Cota (structural biology, Imperial College). We will be recruiting new staff in each of these labs (see https://www.imperial.ac.uk/jobs/description/NAT00254/research-associate-protein-x-ray-crystallography for details of post at Imperial College)

This project will be of interest for those seeking to work on novel aspects of cell biology in the context of cancer, and who wish to undertake cross-disciplinary approaches to medical science and cancer research. The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant subject. In particular we are seeking applicants who have recently completed their PhD. training and whose ambition is to obtain an independent group leader/PI position in 5-6 years’ time.

For informal enquiries please email Prof Jim Norman j.norman@beatson.gla.ac.uk or Dr. Leo Carlin l.carlin@beatson.gla.ac.uk
At the Cancer Research UK Beatson Institute, we are committed to increasing the number of female scientists at this level and strongly encourage female applicants to apply. We have recently introduced a highly attractive, innovative maternity policy, which includes providing a postdoc with support and funding so that their projects can continue during their maternity leave.

All applications must be made via our website at http://www.beatson.gla.ac.uk/careers/postdoctoral-fellows/.

Closing date for applications is 30th September 2018
