Postdoctoral Fellowship to study white matter disease in Alzheimer’s and cerebrovascular disease

An NIH-funded postdoctoral fellow position is open at the Schepens Eye Research Institute of Mass Eye and Ear and Harvard Medical School for studies of white matter disease in familial Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and hereditary cerebrovascular disease, under the supervision of Dr. Joseph F. Arboleda-Velasquez in close collaboration with Dr. Diego Sepulveda-Falla from the University Medical Center Hamburg – Eppendorf, Department of Neuropathology in Germany; and Dr. Yakeel Quiroz and others in the Massachusetts Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center community of the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Our research integrates genetic, molecular, neuropathological, clinical and preclinical data to characterize some of the earliest dementia-related brain changes in white matter. The fellow will have access to two extraordinarily rich preclinical hereditary dementia groups, 1) the Colombian kindred with Presenilin 1 E280A (Glu280Ala) mutation, estimated to have 1,500 mutation carriers; 2) samples and clinical data from individuals with inherited forms of vascular dementia including CADASIL; and, 3) new in vivo models for familial AD and hereditary cerebrovascular disease.
Applicants should have a PhD in neuroscience/neuroimaging, biomedical engineering, or a related discipline, and should have a demonstrated record of experience working with in vivo models and excellent scientific writing skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills.
