Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) or PhD Student (m/f/d)
A member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the HZDR employs about 1,200 people. The Center’s focus is on interdisciplinary research in the areas energy, health, and matter.
The Institute of Fluid Dynamics of HZDR has a strong focus on the transport, deposition and resuspension of sub-millimetre particles in flows. In urban systems, the transport of particles such as pollen particles and urban road dust pose the greatest health risk. The Institute of Fluid Dynamics currently offers a 2-year position to investigate numerically the transport, deposition and resuspension of hazardous particles, ranging in size from 1 μm to 100 μm, in large urban surfaces. Experimental validations, to be performed at our partner’s institution, are also foreseen.
As part of the Institute, the Department of Computational Fluid Dynamics invites applications as Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d). Upon request, it might be possible to turn the position into doctoral studies.
The position is available immediately. The employment contract is limited until 30.09.2021.
Tasks:
# perform a literature survey on transport, deposition and resuspension of pollen in urban environments
# conduct experimental tests at our partner’s institution
# implement a particle transport model
# simulate urban flows with large eddy simulations
# compare numerical with experimental data
Requirements:
# very good PhD degree in fluid mechanics or atmospheric sciences with a strong background in particle-laden flows
# experience in simulating atmospheric flows will be an advantage
# the ability to perform experimental measurements is equally important, as a one week measurement campaign is planned at our partner’s institution
